  5.     When financially emaciated Pan Am was looking for a
  6. well-heeled partner, few carriers were courting the airline.
  7. But as soon as the venerable company filed for Chapter 11
  8. protection last week, competitors were suddenly flocking to
  9. bankruptcy court. Rival carriers Delta, Trans World and
  10. Northwest all expressed interest in buying some part of the
  11. bankrupt airline. Even show-biz financier Kirk Kerkorian made
  12. an offer, promising to provide as much as $50 million in
  13. emergency financing. But bankruptcy judge Cornelius Blackshear
  14. rejected all the bids as latecomers.

  16.     Instead, the Manhattan-based judge allowed Pan Am to go
  17. ahead with an earlier deal to sell its five U.S.-to-London
  18. routes to United Airlines for $290 million. Pan Am will get an
  19. immediate infusion of $150 million, one-third from United and
  20. the rest in bank loans. Pan Am plans to keep flying and honor
  21. all tickets and frequent-flyer credits.
